Colombia’s internal armed conflict is one of the oldest in Latin America, spanning more than 50 years. It includes conflicts between political stakeholders on the right and left as well as government and non-governmental armed actors. Issues of landholding, drug trafficking, and economic access have sparked various elements of the conflict. Between 1948 and 2002, more than 220,000 people were killed, predominantly in the countryside. The majority of the victims were farmers, ethnic groups, civil society leaders, women, and children.
